You may have come across posts claiming that MTN Uganda is shutting down its operations because of xenophobic unrest in South Africa. Well, it is not. The claims have no factual basis.

MTN Uganda’s official channels, its website, social media platforms, and recent press release have not announced any plans to shut down its operations in Uganda. Instead, the company has been dealing with a separate issue. On Sunday, 5 July 2026, MTN Uganda experienced a nationwide service outage reportedly caused by a power fault at one of its data centres.

The disruption left millions of customers unable to make calls, send text messages, access mobile internet, or use MTN Mobile Money services for several hours. Later that day, MTN Uganda confirmed through its official platforms that the outage was operational in nature and had been resolved.

On Tuesday, 7 July 2026, MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge, alongside MTN MoMo Managing Director-designate Phrase Lubega, led a press briefing at the company’s Kampala headquarters, apologising for the disruption and explaining the cause of the nationwide outage on Sunday.

Coinciding with reports of xenophobic incidents in South Africa, MTN Uganda’s nationwide outage appears to have fuelled false online rumours that the company is shutting down its operations in Uganda.

MTN Uganda, a subsidiary of South African multinational MTN Group, is one of the country’s largest telecommunications operators and biggest taxpayers. Its sister company, MTN Mobile Money, a key financial services provider, facilitates millions of daily transactions in Uganda.

If MTN Uganda were ever to exit the Ugandan market, it would not happen overnight. As a licensed telecommunications operator, any decision to cease operations would require regulatory approvals, compliance with licensing obligations, and a structured transition process involving the relevant authorities, including UCC, URA, and URSB. The process would likely take months or longer before final closure.

And as a financial service provider, MTN Mobile Money is regulated by the Bank of Uganda. Any decision to discontinue its services would also require regulatory approval and a managed wind-down process to protect customers, employees, and other stakeholders.

The clearest and most recent example is Standard Chartered Bank, which announced its exit from the Wealth and Retail Banking business in Uganda in November 2024, before agreeing to sell the business to Absa Bank on 24 October 2025. As of the date of this publication, the transition is not complete, with Stan Chartered customers continuing to access banking services normally.

This highlights that the exit of major businesses, such as MTN, does not happen overnight.

In short, if MTN Uganda were ever to exit the Ugandan market, it would require regulatory approvals, customer notifications, and a structured transition process that would likely take months rather than occurring suddenly.

As things stand, there has been no announcement from MTN Uganda, MTN Group, or any relevant authority indicating that MTN is shutting down its operations in Uganda.

28 June 2026, a sunny and beautiful day across much of central Uganda. Beyond the clear skies, the country continues to grapple with political tension, arrests, media shutdowns, and the absence of public figures. One striking detail stands out: nearly every headline appears to revolve around one person, and it is not the President.

Anita Among House Arrest
Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among remains under strict house arrest at her Nakasero residence, with reports indicating she is gravely ill with severe leg swelling and a suspected blood clot, and has been denied permission to seek treatment abroad.

Erias Lukwago at Mulago Hospital
Opposition figure and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, facing charges including misprision of treason, was on Thursday, 25 June 2026, transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialised treatment after his health deteriorated in detention.

Despite doctors’ recommendations for treatment in India, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on 27 June 2026, stated in a tweet: “Lukwago can be as SICK as he can pretend! He is going NOWHERE! If he wants to die, I will take responsibilty!” Access to Erias Lukwago remains heavily restricted.

NTV Uganda, Spark TV, & Daily Monitor Shutdown
Muhoozi ordered the shutdown of NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor on 27 June 2026, with military forces laying siege to Nation Media Group premises in the early hours of 28 June 2026, forcing all its outlets, including NTV Uganda, Spark TV, 90.4 Dembe FM and 93.3 FM, off air.

NMG MD Susan Nsibirwa Hunted
Following the crackdown on NMG outlets, Muhoozi ordered “all police patrols” to arrest NMG Managing Director Susan Nsibirwa on sight, tweeting, “Sue Nsibirwa… I’m looking for her,” with her whereabouts still unknown.

Miria Matembe is Still Missing
Veteran politician and women’s rights activist Miria Koburunga Matembe remains missing following a security raid on her Luzira home on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, with family and activists demanding information on the 72-year-old’s whereabouts.

Janet Museveni Missing
Following JC Muyingo’s June 25 appointment as acting Minister of Education and Sports, 78-year-old First Lady Janet Museveni has remained completely unseen publicly since March 2026.

Robert Kyagulanyi in Diaspora
Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, remains in the diaspora following his official announcement of departure on 14 March 2026 amid heightened political tension and two months spent in hiding. Reports indicate that Kyagulanyi has been focusing on international engagements, meeting diaspora supporters, and speaking on governance and human rights concerns in Uganda.

589th Day of Kizza Besigye in Detention
Following his abduction from Nairobi, Kenya, on 16 November 2024, veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye remains in detention as continuous judicial delays keep his treason trial in limbo.

Amidst all this, President Yoweri Museveni was last officially seen in public on June 26, 2026, when he passed out 9,952 police and immigration officers at a parade in Kabalye, Masindi District.

If you’ve been scrolling through X over the weekend, you may have seen claims that Uganda’s biggest private media house is about to go off air. So, what is actually happening?

On Saturday, 27 June 2026, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, posted on X that President Yoweri Museveni had approved his plan to shut down Nation Media Group Uganda’s two flagship outlets.

“Mzee has approved my plan to close both NTV and Monitor. We are moving immediately!” Muhoozi tweeted at 11:32 pm.

This post, which quickly spread across social media, followed a series of similar threats by Muhoozi earlier this month, including one on 13 June in which he wrote:

“I want to switch off both @DailyMonitor and @ntvuganda. I will do it soon. I just need clearance from Mzee.”

After claiming on Saturday that Mzee (President Museveni) had approved the move, Muhoozi went on to declare that “NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor are being shut down today!” and that they would not reopen without his permission.

So, did it happen? The situation is partly unfolding on the ground.

NTV Uganda remains on air, and the Daily Monitor continues publishing on its website. However, it has been reported that the military was deployed early Sunday, 28 June 2026, at the Daily Monitor’s Namuwongo offices and NTV Uganda’s studios at Kampala Serena Hotel. Entry and exit points at both media houses were blocked by armed forces, restricting access to NMG staff.

The public awaits official statements from the UPDF, UCC, and Nation Media Group Uganda regarding the situation.

5:40 am Update – NTV Uganda and Spark TV have been forced off air.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo as Uganda’s Acting Minister of Education and Sports with immediate effect. According to a press release issued by the Presidential Press Unit on 25 June 2026, Muyingo will oversee the ministry in the absence of a substantive minister.

Muyingo is a long-serving education administrator, politician, and educator who has served as the State Minister for Higher Education since 2011 and as the State Minister of Primary Education. He is one of the key figures in Uganda’s education sector, having been involved in several government education initiatives, including higher education reforms, student financing programmes, and digital learning projects.

Before this appointment, Muyingo retained his role as State Minister for Higher Education in President Museveni’s newly announced 2026 – 2031 Cabinet.

Muyingo takes over the leadership of the ministry from First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, who has served as Minister of Education and Sports since June 2016 and was retained in the cabinet announced in May 2026. The State House statement indicates that his appointment is temporary and intended to ensure continuity at the ministry. Public speculation has circulated that Janet Museveni was last seen in public on 21 March 2021.

A former Member of Parliament for Bamunanika County (2011-2021), Muyingo is the founder of educational institutions, including St Charles Lwanga International School, Seeta Nursery & Kindergarten, Seeta Primary School, Seeta High School and Seeta University.

17 June 2026 – Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Erias Lukwago is currently being detained at Kiira Division Police Station in Wakiso District, with prosecutors expected to review allegations that could see him charged with treason-related offences, according to a report by Daily Monitor.

Lukwago’s whereabouts had been unknown since Monday, when armed operatives picked him from his home in Wakaliga, Kampala. The incident drew criticism from the public, opposition leaders, legal practitioners, and human rights campaigners, who demanded answers on his location.

Before reports of his official detention at Kira Division Police Station emerged on Wednesday, Erias Lukwago had already become a national talking point since Monday. This followed a series of social media posts by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who shared photos of what the public confirmed was Lukwago in a confined tiled room. In his posts, Gen Muhoozi repeatedly referred to him as a “FOOL,” and claimed to be holding him in his “basement.” On the same Monday, Uganda Police confirmed that Lukwago was not in their custody.

By Wednesday, police had revised their earlier position.

Daily Monitor reports that Uganda Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma, who made the Monday stance, confirmed on Wednesday morning that Lukwago is under police custody. He said investigators were finalising documentation before submitting the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal guidance and approval.

According to the report, authorities are considering charges of “treason and misprision of treason” against the veteran opposition politician and lawyer.

Misprision of treason is a legal offence that occurs when someone aware of an act of treason, or a planned act of treason, deliberately conceals it or fails to report it to the proper government authorities.

The development links Lukwago to the same case of opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye, whom he has been representing as part of the legal defence team. Besigye has spent more than 500 days in prison as continuous judicial delays and shifting court proceedings keep his trial in limbo.

June 15, 2026 – A political storm erupted on Monday after Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and son of President Yoweri Museveni, shared taunts and photos on X that appeared to show former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago being held in what he describes as his ‘basement.’

The posts triggered widespread concern among opposition leaders, human rights activists, and members of the public, who questioned the legality of Erias Lukwago’s publicly witnessed abduction and demanded information about his whereabouts and well-being, fuelled by #FreeEriasLukwago.

Reports of Erias Lukwago’s Abduction
According to opposition figures, armed security operatives raided Lukwago’s home in Wakaliga, Kampala, during the early hours of Monday morning.

Reports indicate that Lukwago was preparing to serve High Court summons on Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba when armed personnel violently abducted him. Witnesses reportedly observed a surveillance drone operating near the residence before they broke into the premises.

Muhoozi’s Posts on X
Shortly after reports of the raid emerged, Gen. Muhoozi began posting a series of messages on X that appeared to reference Lukwago.

In one post, he wrote: “I have captured a FOOL and taken him to the basement!”

He later shared a photo of a blindfolded man seated in what appeared to be a tiled room, captioned “Ongea Kiswahili.” The individual was widely identified online as Erias Lukwago.

Investigative journalist Andrew Natumanya (@NinyeTabz) claimed the room shown in the photo resembled the location where NUP supporter and Bobi Wine’s long-time bodyguard, Eddie Mutwe, was previously photographed following his arrest, suggesting it could be a military detention facility in Mbuya.

Using terms such as “warming up,” “urinating,” and needing “diapers,” Muhoozi continued boasting about Erias Lukwago’s situation along with promises of more pictures.

“I’m proud of ALL the hurt and pain I will inflict on the CRIMINAL LUKWAGO!” – Muhoozi tweeted.

Opposition Condemns Incident
Opposition leaders have condemned the developments.

National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine condemned the abduction of Lukwago, arguing that if an outgoing Kampala Lord Mayor, former MP, and senior lawyer could be treated this way for attempting to serve court summons, then ordinary opposition supporters face even greater risks.

Several opposition figures raised concerns about Lukwago’s health and safety, noting that he had recently been in fragile condition. Human rights advocates also called for authorities to disclose his location and ensure that his legal rights are respected. To many of these, including former MPs Ssemujju Nganda and Odonga Otto, Muhoozi responded through his official account with direct threats.

Questions Over Official Custody – Uganda Police Force
Adding to the uncertainty, Uganda Police Force, through its spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, officially stated that they had no record of Erias Lukwago being held in official police custody.

As of Monday evening, neither the government nor the military had issued a formal statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding Lukwago’s abduction, while calls for transparency and accountability continued to grow.

“This fool will not sleep tonight. Kiboko mpaka…” – Muhoozi continued to tweet.

ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance. In simple terms, it’s a report card for businesses that looks beyond profit, but at how they operates in three key areas.

Corporate leaders and policy architects gathered on Friday, 11 June, 2026, for the second annual East Africa Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Summit, hosted by Capital One Group (COG). The high-level virtual assembly, which brought together regional board members, chief financial officers, operations directors, and public relations strategists, comes at a critical juncture as East African markets edge closer to sweeping structural and regulatory changes regarding corporate sustainability.

Held under the theme “ESG as the Capital of Sustainability: From Commitment to Delivery,” the high-level virtual event comes at a defining moment for the domestic market, following confirmation that the Bank of Uganda will institute mandatory ESG reporting guidelines for all financial institutions starting January 2027. This incoming framework aims to transform sustainability from a voluntary corporate social responsibility exercise into a strict operational and legal imperative.

The 2027 banking mandate will require financial institutions to look far beyond traditional financial reporting, forcing them to actively integrate climate risk, social equity, and corporate governance into their core decision-making frameworks. Because commercial lenders serve as the absolute gatekeepers of economic capital, this structural shift will generate immediate, unavoidable ripple effects across the entire corporate supply chain.

Local enterprises ranging from major agricultural exporters and manufacturers to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will face heightened credit compliance requirements, risk-pricing penalties, or outright exclusion if they lack verifiable sustainability data.

This regulatory shift mirrors a sweeping continental momentum toward formalised corporate accountability. Across Africa, nations are enforcing strict frameworks: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Egypt, and Tunisia already mandate sustainability disclosures for listed and public entities, while Ghana and Nigeria have adopted International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) standards, with Nigeria targeting large enterprises by 2028. Evolving even faster, East Africa is leading by example; Tanzania implemented mandatory climate-related disclosures in 2025, and Kenya commenced its first mandatory ESG reporting cycle for Public Interest Entities in January 2026.

“With mandatory reporting for Public Interest Entities starting in 2027, companies cannot afford to wait,” Manager, Standards and Technical Services at Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), Elvis Moenga says. The joint advisory by ICPAK and the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) requires listed entities to undergo a rigorous Sustainability Reporting Readiness Assessment. This involves aggressively mapping out current data availability, internal governance controls, and resource gaps against the four core pillars of Governance, Strategy, Risk Management, and Metrics.”

The summit intentionally targets a cross-section of corporate executives, board members, chief financial officers, operations directors, and public relations strategists. As market sophistication grows, corporate communications circles are increasingly recognising that authentic brand storytelling must be rooted in clear, data-driven operational compliance.

Paul Mwirigi Muriungi – Managing Director and Head of Strategy at COG EA Ltd

“ESG is no longer a matter of corporate goodwill or public relations. It is a prerequisite for accessing capital, winning contracts, attracting investors, remaining competitive, and relevant,” Managing Director and Head of Strategy at COG EA Ltd, Paul Mwirigi Muriungi says. “Uganda, therefore, has little room for delay. The question is no longer whether ESG reporting will become mandatory. The question is whether Ugandan businesses will use the remaining transition period to prepare. Unfortunately, many organisations still misunderstand what ESG actually means.”

Capital One Group (COG) is a marketing and communications agency in Uganda, Kenya and Zambia, specialising in PR, digital marketing and creative services.

The engagement explicitly tackles the critical line between genuine corporate transparency and the rising threat of greenwashing, ensuring that local brands build structural resilience that withstands both regulatory scrutiny and public accountability.

“We cannot simply adopt Western ESG frameworks that are borrowed and transplant them directly down here,” says Ernest Ssekisonge, Managing Director at Kasi Insight. The execution environments are completely different. As practitioners, businesses, and policymakers, we must fill the gap by designing a structurally and contextually relevant ESG framework that speaks directly to Ugandan realities and needs.”

Attendees left equipped with practical and localised toolkits to begin tracking data, restructuring internal governance boards, and realigning their corporate footprints to maintain creditworthiness amid the upcoming banking landscape.

ESG Summit is a convening of ESG awareness and education, more to do with ESG in action. It was supposed to be a physical event, but we were forced to have it online due to the emerging threats of Ebola that restricted the travel of speakers to Kenya and Uganda.

Regardless, it was successful with more than 70 online attendees, mostly ESG-linked professionals. It was supported by Radio One FM 90, KASI Insight, and ICPAK.
Ugandan musician and music producer Joshua Baraka has announced the sad passing of his father, Pastor Okello Lawrence Habalu, who died on the evening of June 7, 2026, at the age of 57.

Following the news, an emotional video from November 2025 has resurfaced online. The clip marked the first time Joshua introduced his father to fans on camera, referring to him as “Mr Lawrence Okello.” In a TikTok video, Joshua interviewed his father about his musical success and how he felt about his decision to drop out of school. Before asking the questions, he described his dad as “the GOAT, the baddest, the nicest, and the greatest father ever.”

Responding to Joshua, whom he referred to as “Josh,” in the video, Mr Lawrence expressed his great pride, saying, “I feel great, and I’m proud of you. And I’m proud that you’re making a difference in this world through your music.

Following the announcement of his father’s passing, Joshua Baraka shared the burial arrangements through his social media platforms.

According to the announcement, a church service for Pastor Okello Lawrence Habalu, who was born on May 2, 1969, will take place today, June 8, 2026, at Kamwokya Church of God starting at 3:00 PM. He will then be laid to rest on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in Kayunga, Bugelele Kitimbwa at 2:00 PM.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced plans to recruit 10,200 personnel in a nationwide exercise scheduled to run between June and July 2026.

The recruitment programme was communicated through a circular from the Office of the President following a request by the Chief of Joint Staff, Lt Gen Jack Agonza Bakasumba. According to the army, the exercise will target holders of the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), with preference given to applicants who studied science subjects.

In a letter dated 22 May 2026, Lt Gen Bakasumba stated that the UPDF intends to enlist 10,200 new personnel from across the country through a general recruitment exercise.

Online applications will be accepted from 10 June to 24 July 2026. District and city authorities will then compile and publish lists of shortlisted candidates on official notice boards and the UPDF website between 1 July and 14 July.

Successful applicants will then proceed to the physical stage of the recruitment exercise, which is scheduled to begin on 20 July 2026 at designated recruitment centres nationwide. Recruitment teams will carry out screening and final selection during this phase.

Additional details about the recruitment exercise of the 102,000 personnel will be communicated during the briefing at the Uganda Media Centre, as confirmed by the Directorate of Defence Public Information (DDPI). Read here

UPDF officials have also indicated that new measures have been introduced to strengthen transparency and reduce corruption during the recruitment process.

The recruitment exercise comes at a time when interest in military careers is growing, partly due to recent salary enhancements approved for lower-ranking soldiers. Under the revised pay structure, a Private is expected to earn UGX 828,426 per month, up from UGX 650,000, while a Corporal will earn UGX 1.2 million.

As applications open across the country, the recruitment exercise is likely to spark a familiar debate: are most Ugandans joining the army out of a commitment to national service, or has unemployment made military careers one of the few viable paths to a stable income?

In a surprising turn of events, Ugandan veteran journalist and politician Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, who, in the January 2026 elections, did not secure a fourth term as Member of Parliament for Kira Municipality, has drawn all the attention on X (formerly Twitter) after creating and announcing his official and only social media handle on the web.

Known as one of the most vocal and high-profile opposition figures in Ugandan politics, Ssemujju has long been frequently impersonated, with numerous accounts falsely claiming to be him.

On 1 June 2026, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda (52 years old) launched his official X account @SsemujjuIN, and within less than 12 hours, he had already gained over 25K followers with no accounts followed, supported by two introductory videos in English and Luganda confirming the account’s authenticity.

“I have opened an X, formerly Twitter, account. That is why I have recorded a voice for you to know that this is now the official account that I will be using. There are many people who have been operating platforms in my name. Until today, I was not operating any social media account. Please take note this is my official account, and I will be updating you and, where necessary, sharing information with you,” said Ssemujju in the English version of his first two video posts on X.

The English version of the two videos has since reached over 800K users on X.

This massive following of former MP for Kira Municipality, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, sets a 12-hour follower record on any social media platform by any Ugandan. If you are reading this at a later date, chances are he has well over 100K followers.
