Available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and web browsers, open-source ArtCraft has become a hot topic. And you, my friend, are probably wondering what all the fuss is about. How do you get your hands on these apps, and what should you know before installing them? Based on what I’ve learnt so far, here are my two cents…

ArtCraft is a free open-source suite of creative and productivity apps designed as alternatives to Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office.

How to Download & Install ArtCraft (Latest Version)
The easiest and safest way to get started is to visit getartcraft.com or the official ArtCraft GitHub repository and download ArtCraft Launcher.

Think of ArtCraft Launcher as Adobe Creative Cloud: a central dashboard for downloading, launching and updating the apps. The difference? ArtCraft is lightweight. The launcher file is 8 MB and grows to about 21 MB when installed, although sizes may vary between subsequent releases.

Once you’ve installed the launcher, things are fairly self-explanatory. Choose the apps you want, install them and get started.

What You Should Know Before Downloading ArtCraft

#1. Download ArtCraft Launcher, not Individual Apps
Although individual apps, such as PhotoCraft (a Photoshop alternative) and WordCraft (a Microsoft Word alternative), also have their own installers, the all-in-one ArtCraft launcher makes it easier to install and update multiple apps without downloading each manually. Since the ArtCraft suite is still new and actively being developed, regular updates are important.

#2. Requirement of 8 GB RAM & 2GB Storage?
One of ArtCraft’s biggest attractions is its smaller installation size compared with Adobe apps. However, actual hardware requirements for RAM and CPU usage vary depending on the application, the file’s complexity and the task being performed.

#3. ArtCraft Compatibility with Adobe & Microsoft Apps

Another benefit of ArtCraft is a consistent interface. If you are familiar with, say, Adobe Illustrator or Microsoft Word, you will find that their alternatives (clones), VectorCraft and WordCraft, use the same controls and keyboard shortcuts.

File Compatibility
ArtCraft apps can also open and read their corresponding files (native file formats) from the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, and vice versa. However, compatibility may vary depending on the software versions you are using.

Third-Party Plugins & Extensions
Currently, ArtCraft applications are not compatible with Adobe-supported third-party plugins and extensions such as Mr Horse, Aescripts, Red Giant, Nik Collection.… However, this may change as development continues.

#4. Legally Free Software
All ArtCraft apps are free and open source. If you’ve been relying on cracked Adobe and Microsoft software, the ArtCraft suite gives you a legitimate, up-to-date alternative without an Adobe subscription.

An open-source app is software whose source code is available for anyone to view, improve or modify, rather than being kept secret by its creators.

However, don’t uninstall Adobe apps just yet. ArtCraft is still developing, and some features may be missing, work differently or need further refinement. Test the tools you use regularly, open your existing projects and check that everything works as expected before switching.

Who Should Use ArtCraft Apps?
If you’ve been using cracked Adobe Creative Suite or Microsoft Office software, this is for you.

If you’ve been limited to older Adobe software because of an outdated or low-end PC, ArtCraft offers alternatives that replicate the latest Adobe apps without demanding the same hardware resources.

If you’re a multitasker with a high-end PC but want to save on app installation size, RAM and CPU usage, ArtCraft is a good lightweight option.

However, if your work depends on advanced editing tools, specialised effects, third-party plugins or established professional workflows, test the relevant ArtCraft apps thoroughly before crossing.

ArtCraft is built around local file processing and user privacy, and it does not offer the same built-in cloud storage and syncing integration as Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft OneDrive. If you rely on automatic cloud storage, you may need alternative file-sync methods.

ArtCraft Alternatives to Adobe, Microsoft, and other Apps

Below are some of the ArtCraft applications and their Adobe and Microsoft counterparts. The collection is still growing, with tools extending into areas such as audio production with SoundCraft (an Avid Pro Tools clone), computer-aided design with CADCraft (an Autodesk clone), and web design with FigCraft (a Figma clone). It won’t be long before ArtCraft launches its own open-source alternative to Windows!

You’ve probably noticed that USB ports come in different colours on your PC or laptop. Those colours aren’t for decoration. They often explain why file transfers feel slow or why charging your phone takes longer than expected. Once you understand what USB port colours and versions mean, you may realise your computer isn’t the problem. You might simply be plugging into the wrong port.

White USB Ports
White USB ports usually indicate USB 1.0 or 1.1, the earliest USB standards released in 1996 and 1998. These ports were extremely slow by today’s standards, with maximum transfer speeds of just 12 megabits per second. With this speed, copying a single song could take several seconds, and transferring a movie could take hours.

Because of these limitations, white USB ports are almost extinct. You may still find them on very old PCs, printers, or legacy equipment. If you ever come across one, think of it as a basic input port for keyboards and mice, but not for anything that needs fast data transfer.

Black USB Ports
Black USB ports usually indicate USB 2.0, which was released in 2000. This USB version was a huge upgrade at the time, increasing speeds to up to 480 megabits per second, about 40 times faster than the old USB 1.x ports. This made moving songs, photos, or everyday files finally feel practical and reliable.

Although faster versions have been introduced, USB 2.0 ports are still common today. Because they are cheap, reliable, and suitable for low-power devices, many modern computers include them for accessories such as keyboards, mice, webcams, and printers. Just remember, they work fine, but for tasks like transferring large files or running an external hard drive, they’re much slower compared to newer USB versions. Charging is also limited compared to newer standards.

Why Older USB Ports Feel Slow (Duplex Explained)
Both USB 1.x and USB 2.0 use half-duplex communication. This means data can only travel in one direction at a time. The port must stop sending before it can receive, and vice versa.

Blue USB Ports
The most recognisable blue-coloured USB ports represent USB 3.0, introduced in 2008 and marketed as SuperSpeed USB. These ports lived up to the SuperSpeed name, with transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second, more than 10 times faster than black USB 2.0 ports. As a result, moving big files, HD movies, or entire backups became much quicker. USB 3.0 also introduced full-duplex communication, enabling data to be sent and received at the same time.

(SS + Voltage Icon) – SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Port with High-Power Charging for Connected Devices

Speed wasn’t the only improvement. USB 3.0 ports could also allow more power output to connected devices, supporting external hard drives and other power-hungry accessories. However, faster charging is not guaranteed, as charging speed still depends on the device and the charging standard it supports. The blue colour made it easy to spot these ports on laptops and PCs, and even though newer versions like USB 3.1 and 3.2 exist, many manufacturers still use blue to indicate high-speed ports on newer systems.

Yellow and Orange USB Ports
Yellow and orange USB ports are not linked to a specific USB version or speed, even though they follow the USB 3.0 standard. Instead, they usually indicate an “always-on” or “sleep-and-charge” port. These ports continue supplying power even when the computer is turned off or in sleep mode. For example, you could plug in your phone, close your laptop lid, and it would still charge without needing the computer fully on.

3 “SS” (SuperSpeed USB 3.0) for fast data transfers, and 1 “SS with power icon” for always-on USB 3.0 charging, even when the PC is turned off.

They are useful for charging phones, power banks, or wireless accessories without keeping the computer running. Some of these ports can also deliver higher current than standard USB ports, making them faster and more reliable for charging devices. While the port colour varies by manufacturer, sometimes even red or black, the key indicator of this function is usually a battery icon, lightning bolt, or power symbol marking next to the port.

Teal and Red USB Ports
Teal, introduced in 2023, and red, introduced in 2017, coloured USB ports are often used to indicate higher-performance ports, commonly USB 3.1 or USB 3.2, which are upgrades to the older USB 3 standard.

USB 3.1 doubled the speed of USB 3.0, reaching up to 10 gigabits per second, while USB 3.2 can reach up to 20 gigabits per second on supported devices. These speeds are fast enough to move massive files, 4K video footage, or even run external SSDs at full performance.

That said, the colour alone isn’t a guarantee of speed. Some manufacturers use teal, while others use red, and occasionally the colour red appears on high-power USB 2.0 ports designed mainly for charging. That’s why it’s important to check for markings like SS, SS10, or SS20 next to the port, as they indicate the actual speed. In short, teal or red USB ports with “SS” markings are your fastest data ports, ideal for large files, 4K video, or running external SSDs at full performance.

4 Green USB Ports (SS10) – SuperSpeed+ USB 3.1, 2 Black USB 2.0 Ports, 1 Blue USB Port – SuperSpeed USB 3.0, and 1 Type-C Port – SuperSpeed USB 3.2 (20 Gbps)

What You Should Remember
USB port colour can help you make a quick guess, but it should never be your only guide, since some manufacturers colour ports purely for design. When performance matters, such as charging or file transfer, always check port markings, symbols, or the manufacturer’s specifications.

If you’ve been following tech YouTubers like Marques Brownlee and Linus Sebastian, you’ve probably heard the term “TechTember.” But what does it actually mean?

TechTember is simply the unofficial season in September when major tech companies roll out their biggest products. The name blends “technology” and “September,” and for many fans, it marks the start of the most exciting stretch of the year for consumer tech devices, software, and ecosystem updates.

While Apple usually dominates the conversation with its iPhone launch events, it’s not the only player. Microsoft, Samsung, Google, OnePlus, and others often time their launches around this same period.

TechTember 2025 – What’s Coming this Year?
On September 4, at IFA 2025 in Berlin, Samsung kicked off this year’s TechTember, unveiling the Galaxy S25 FE, Tab S11 series, and new AI-powered smart home devices.

Following Samsung’s announcements, Apple has set September 9, 2025, for its ‘Awe Dropping’ event at the Steve Jobs Theatre in Apple Park, to reveal the iPhone 17 lineup, covering iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to replace the Plus model with an ultra-thin design. The company will also launch iOS 26, featuring new Apple Intelligence features (AI-driven) and a refreshed interface.

At the same event, Apple is expected to unveil new wearables: the Apple Watch Series 11, Watch Ultra 3, Watch SE 3, and the third generation of AirPods Pro. Reports also point to a refreshed Apple TV 4K and a new HomePod with a screen.

Following these Techtember events, Google is likely to announce the Pixel 10 series and Android 16 updates in October, while Microsoft may expand the Surface family later this year. OnePlus is also rumoured to have a late-September launch lined up.

Why TechTember matters
For tech fans, TechTember is more like the “new year” of gadgets, setting the stage for the holiday shopping rush, defining the competitive landscape among brands, and often introducing technologies that shape the next 12 months. From new smartphone designs to AI features, TechTember is more than just product launches; it drives the consumer tech market.

Fun fact: September, now the ninth month, was originally the seventh month in the Roman calendar, which is why its name comes from the Latin word ‘septem,’ meaning seven.

Overlooking general browser drawbacks, Microsoft Edge is actually a good browser when you don’t want to rely on Google’s dominant Chrome browser. For users working with websites, the Edge’s default search engine, Bing, has in recent years proved to be faster at indexing new site data than Google Search.

One issue is that Bing’s default settings open a new tab for each search result click. And that’s before Microsoft Edge starts triggering redirect loops (too many redirects) that open additional tabs when browsing websites. If this sounds like a problem you’re frustrated with, this article, in a few words, explains how to fix it.

Fix Microsoft Edge’s Bing Search Opening New Tabs
#1. In the Microsoft Edge browser, search for something on Bing.

#2. On the results page, click the Settings (three horizontal lines ☰ hamburger menu) in the top-left corner and select SafeSearch.

#3. Under Results, uncheck “Open links from search results in a new tab or window” and “Open links from news results in a new tab or window”. Then click Save on the pop-up menu.

This prevents Bing search results from unnecessarily opening new tabs for every link. Since this is a Bing Search setting and not specific to Microsoft Edge, the same fix works when using Bing on Chrome, Firefox, or other browsers.

Screenshots [How to Stop Bing from Opening New Tabs – Fix Microsoft Edge Redirects]

How To Keep Your Edge Browser on the Current Page Tab (Fix Redirects)
Another issue that can open unwanted tabs in Microsoft Edge is redirect loops, where a website keeps cycling between pages without loading correctly. These are usually caused by website misconfigurations, corrupted cookies, or cached data, rather than the browser itself, though worse when on an outdated version of Edge.

#1. To fix it, open Edge → click the three dots (···) in the top-right corner → go to Settings → select About Microsoft Edge, and let it check for updates.

#2. If the problem persists, reset Edge to its default settings to clear any corrupted data or conflicting settings.

People love their secrets. But in a world where terms like “selling data” and “data mining” get thrown around in tech videos, it can feel scarier than it should. And if you’re reading this, you’re probably curious to know what information websites and mobile apps collect when you use them.

With examples, let’s shed some light on the kind of information sites like this one gather, and what they use it for.

I don’t know if this will scare you, but website owners can see the location (country, region, or city) of their users. Websites and apps use this information to understand where visitors are coming from and possibly tailor content for that region. Nymy Net, for instance, has most of its site visitors in Uganda and the USA, which can be narrowed down to city level. Noticed we have many articles on Kampala? Search engines like Google and Bing also use location data to rank search results based on what’s most relevant to you, considering both your location and, in some cases, the website’s server location.

Device type, operating system, and browser type are other pieces of information site owners collect when you visit. Whether you’re an iPhone user browsing with Safari, an Android device on Chrome, or a desktop running Microsoft Edge, this data helps improve the site’s design so it displays correctly for your device and browser.

Let’s pause here. Website owners could do much more with this data. But in the right hands, this is how it is intended to be utilised. Later, we’ll get into how it can be misused.

Your browsing history is a different story. Site owners can’t directly see it, but Google can if you’re signed in to your Google account. Your browser, whether it’s Chrome, Edge, or something else, is also secretly collecting your data. This is used mainly for personalised ads. The closest instance here is when I was researching for the best budget phones in Uganda; the following days, almost every site I visited showed phone ads.

Using incognito mode can help reduce this kind of tracking, yet clearing your browsing history won’t fully protect you if you’re still signed in. Google’s “My Activity” logs your web and app activity, including YouTube history, and is used for ad targeting, for platforms and sites like Nymy Net that run Google Ads through AdSense. For clarity, unless an advertiser pays for a direct partnership, site owners don’t control the exact ads shown, although we can block certain categories. If you often search for content around pets, adult content, or health tips, your ads will reflect that.

If website owners can see all the above, they can also see when you visited and how long you stayed on a particular page of the site. At Nymy Net, this helps us measure how relevant an article is and find the best time to publish new posts.

Other data includes your search engine, search terms, referral source, and language settings. This tells site admins whether you came from social media, another site, or a search engine like Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yandex or Yahoo search, and what words you used to find us. These words are used to improve already published titles and content; yes, sites do that.

Through tools like Google Analytics, site owners can also see your screen resolution (do you know your phone’s screen resolution?). Similar to device and browser type, this helps optimise site design and media quality.

We can also track click behaviour, for example, whether you visited the About Us page or the Contact page. This data allows us to understand what interests our visitors and evaluate how well our content meets their needs.

Now for the creepier part. If you sign up for an account on a site, you may be giving away more: social media profiles, age, gender, email address, and interests. Some sites even track mouse movements, often the ones with flashy, heavy designs, where your cursor changes shape to something else. Visiting such sites isn’t always a good idea. This is where data mining can go beyond ad targeting and into questionable territory.

Google Analytics also collects information like device performance, network type (e.g. Wi-Fi or Cellular) and ad interactions. Much of this isn’t even sent to site admins, but is still gathered by Google. Mobile Apps, on the other hand, when given permissions, can go much deeper, accessing contacts, keystrokes, your device’s GPU, ISP details, screen orientation, photos, videos, and even tracking the usage of other apps. Stories of Facebook collecting metadata from user media files (photos and videos) before they are uploaded are common on the web, as are recent claims about Meta AI scanning photos you have not uploaded.

So, if just visiting a site exposes your location, device type, and more, are you safe? Yes, in most cases. The data is collected in bulk and analysed as a whole, not to single out one person. More personal details like your name, gender, or email that are often sold by data brokers are usually only collected when you choose to provide them, for instance, by creating an account or subscribing to updates.

“The internet isn’t free; you pay for it with your attention and data.” – Unknown

Here’s the deal: About 90% of the free content on the web is supported by advertising. Most of the data collected is used to improve user experience and keep sites running by displaying ads. However, some platforms take it further, selling user data for AI training, sharing it with marketing agencies that flood your email with crap, or, worse, using it for malicious purposes.

What should you do? Don’t accept cookies on sites you don’t trust. Use a separate browser for risky sites and deny permissions where possible. Incognito mode and VPNs can help, but remember, you’re still trusting the browser and VPN provider.

Many news, blog, social media, and video platforms now offer premium packages that remove ads and tracking to reduce data collection and targeting. Nymy Net, for instance, we’re currently testing a donation model to keep the site free and less dependent on advertising revenue.

Think you know Apple, Google, Samsung, and Microsoft as tech giants racing to outdo one another? Think again, for beneath their polished devices and services lie billion-dollar deals, quiet dependencies, and partnerships you would never expect… enough talk, let’s get into some of these surprising and lesser-known facts.

You probably knew that Apple’s iPhone screens are primarily manufactured by Samsung Display and LG Display, with Samsung being a major supplier for OLED panels used in recent iPhone models. But did you also know that Samsung earns more from selling screens to Apple for the iPhones than it does from selling its own smartphones? In 2017, for instance, Samsung reportedly made much more profit from supplying displays for the iPhone X (also known as iPhone 10) than it did from sales of its Galaxy S8, released the same year.

Apple uses Google Cloud to store parts of iCloud data. Despite being rivals, Apple reportedly pays Google over $300 million annually for cloud infrastructure, according to The Information in 2021.

A CloudFusion commentary on Apple’s AI struggles noted that Apple had to collaborate with both Google and Amazon to secure enough computing power to build Apple Intelligence, as Apple’s stock of over 50,000 slightly outdated GPUs wasn’t sufficient.

And just when you think you’ve heard it all, Google pays Apple an estimated $20 billion a year, based on 2022 reports, to remain the default search engine in Safari across Apple devices. A 2020 U.S. Department of Justice filing stated that about 50% of Google’s search traffic originates from Apple devices, although this varies year to year. A 2023 CNBC report revealed that Apple receives about 36% of Google’s search revenue generated through Safari, a figure later confirmed by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

Did you notice that during the recent Google event ‘24, while demonstrating a new Android feature, Google, the company behind Android, used Samsung phones instead of its own Pixel line, even though both run on the same operating system? That’s because Samsung Galaxy phones hold a significantly larger share of the Android market and better reflect the typical Android experience than any Android phone on the market. By using Samsung devices, Google gains broader visibility and stronger ecosystem alignment than it currently would with Pixel phones. This trend extends to Google’s advertising of its apps and services.

Back in 1997, Microsoft invested $150 million in Apple when the company was on the verge of collapse. Announced by Steve Jobs at the Macworld Boston Conference, the deal included making Microsoft’s Internet Explorer the default browser on Macs, ensuring the continued development of Microsoft Office for macOS. This unlikely partnership stabilised Apple and paved the way for its resurgence with the iPod and iPhone.

Did you know that most of Google’s business is still largely driven by advertising, not hardware? In 2023, Google Ads accounted for over 75% of the tech company’s $300+ billion revenue, while hardware products like the Pixel phone accounted for only a small fraction.

You may know that ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, also owns CapCut. But did you know that TikTok operates a separate version of the app in China called Douyin? It follows stricter regulations and includes features like parental curfews.

The bite in Apple’s logo was added so it wouldn’t be mistaken for a cherry, ensuring the fruit was clearly recognisable as an apple.

And finally, most voice assistants, including Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant, don’t process your speech locally; instead, they send your commands to cloud servers for processing. This is why Siri or Google Assistant, despite their brilliance, can’t answer 1+1 without an internet connection.

Something, isn’t it? Join our WhatsApp channel for more!

When OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022, discussions around AI taking our jobs dominated headlines. Some tech enthusiasts, however, speculated that ChatGPT could become the next Google—the go-to platform where internet users could get answers to almost anything with just a few prompts. Unlike Google, where users must sift through multiple webpages for the most accurate response, AI chatbots like ChatGPT instantly provide the most probable and accurate answer to inquiries.

ChatGPT’s ability to solve complex problems in math and science, assist with language learning, generate images, and analyse data quickly made it popular among students, researchers, and professionals. In response, by 2023, tech companies like Google and Microsoft began rolling out their own AI chatbots. These AI chatbots were later integrated into their search engines, Google Search and Microsoft Bing—the world’s leading search engines.

Since then, AI chatbots have taken the tech world by storm. With every major tech company and startup racing to launch their own AI models, what started with ChatGPT soon led to the introduction of Bard AI (later rebranded as Gemini), Microsoft Copilot, Grok AI, Meta AI, DeepSeek, Manus AI, name them…

Despite slight differences in features, all these AI models rely on vast amounts of web data collected over the years, including tweets, posts, and uploads. (We previously explained this in detail in Behind the Scenes of AI: Understanding How AI Works in Simple Terms.

On 31 March 2025, Google Trends data showed a global spike in users searching for ‘ChatGPT,’ surpassing searches for ‘Google.’ While this could be influenced by multiple factors, such as the recent ChatGPT Studio Ghibli trend, the impact of users typing “Google” in the browser URL bar to access the Google Search homepage can’t be ruled out.

This shift suggests a growing trend of internet users relying on chatbots like ChatGPT for answers instead of traditional search engines.

A similar shift has been observed with AI integrations in platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and WhatsApp.

Previously, users had to switch between apps for a quick search while texting or using social media. Now, they can instantly ask Grok or Meta AI for answers without leaving the chat, and without the other person realizing they searched for it.

Because of their limitations, AI chatbots like Grok on X and Meta AI on WhatsApp often fall short in handling complex tasks. This has further pushed users to rely more on advanced AI tools, especially OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a key player in the field.

Will ChatGPT and Other AI Replace Google and Other Search Engines?
While ChatGPT and similar AI tools provide convenience, search engines like Google and Microsoft Bing still possess significant advantages. According to an analysis by SparkToro co-founder Rand Fishkin, the number of Google searches (actual usage) has consistently increased each year, and Google Search handles 373x more queries than ChatGPT.

Generative artificial Intelligence chatbots such as ChatGPT, Grok, and Perplexity AI, similar to search engines, are not only providing direct answers but also citing verifiable sources, research papers, and diverse viewpoints, specifically what AI-integrated Google and Bing search engines do when you perform a search.

With AI tools becoming more advanced and deeply embedded in daily tasks, one question arises: Are these chatbots positioning themselves as the next evolution of search engines?

Given their expanding capabilities, it may just be a matter of time…

While it remains uncertain whether ChatGPT will surpass Google as the primary search tool, the current trends suggest a significant shift in user behaviour.

‘Save password?’ We have all received that pop-up at one point or another while using the internet. We use passwords almost everywhere these days—social media, email, online banking, shopping sites, work accounts—there’s practically no shortage of places requiring us to create an account before we can access their services. That’s why it feels incredibly convenient when your browser offers to remember these passwords for you. No need to worry about forgetting them or repeatedly typing them in, right? Just imagine if you have to remember all the unique passwords you use for your services…even the one-time platforms you probably no longer visit.

But what if you want to delete your passwords from the browser? With the increasing cases of phone and browser hacking, many people have become concerned about their digital security, no one wants to be the guy that got hacked—it’s embarrassing. And while most of us are quick to tap ‘Save Password’ when prompted, not everyone knows how to remove stored passwords when they no longer want them saved. Be it for security reasons, switching to a password manager, or simply decluttering saved credentials, deleting passwords from your browser is an important step in managing your online presence, like deleting old messages or emails. Besides, you don’t want some tech guy from some corner of the world getting a hold of your Internet banking passwords just coz you installed some not-so-safe application.

Why Do People Save Passwords in Their Browsers?
Let’s be honest—keeping track of multiple passwords is a headache. I, for one, have spent hours trying to “trial-and-error” a password I used once, failed completely and have had to reset it only to forget it again. Worse, it’s a modern era, online accounts are everywhere and every website insists on a strong combination of uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols as if they will be the ones remembering them for you—which is why Browser password saving features were designed for convenience, allowing users to:

Avoid forgetting passwords—No need to write them down or struggle to recall them, your browser will just fill them in for you when you are required to use them.

Save time–Auto-filling credentials speeds up login processes, just imagine having to leaf through those old notebooks for credentials for some sight you thought you’d never use again and now it’s asking you to log in as you did the last time.

Ease access across devices – Syncing passwords across multiple devices allows seamless login.

However, while this feature is useful, it also comes with security risks.

Why Would You Want to Remove Stored Passwords?
Despite the convenience, many users eventually find themselves wanting to delete saved passwords for several reasons:

Security concerns–If a hacker gains access to your browser, they can retrieve all stored passwords and impersonate you, or take whatever they want from those platforms you have accounts for.

Shared or public computers–If you’ve logged into a shared or public device, leaving passwords stored can put your accounts at risk, anyone adventurous enough can find them and access your data.

Switching to a password manager–Dedicated password managers offer better encryption and protection than browser storage, and thus some just decide to use an actual manager, requiring them to clear the browser-stored passwords they no longer need there.

Cleaning up old credentials–Over time, you may have saved passwords for sites you no longer use or simply switched devices and want to leave the old one clean of your sensitive data.

Click the Opera menu > Settings.

Navigate to Advanced > Privacy and Security.

Click Passwords, then remove any stored credentials.

Additional Security Tips
If you’re concerned about online security, consider these extra steps:

Disable password saving in your browser—This prevents browsers from storing future passwords, and while effective, it means you have to memorise and manually type in your credentials every time you need access to your accounts.

Use a password manager—Dedicated apps like LastPass, Bitwarden, or 1Password offer better encryption than browser storage.

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)—This adds an extra security layer to your accounts by requiring further confirmations, for example, a text code sent you your phone every time you or someone else tries to log into your accounts.

Regularly update passwords—Change your passwords periodically to stay ahead of security risks. Hackers are always learning new tricks and utilising old password lists that may contain a password to your accounts, thus, regularly changing them up/updating them can keep the account fresh from attacks. additionally, try not to use the same password for many accounts. It’s convenient, I know, but then again if one account is compromised, then all your accounts using that same password will be compromised.

Microsoft has made the final decision on Skype Shutting down in May

The once-revolutionary voice and video-calling platform will be off by May 5, 2025. Such a move marks the end of an era for many who have relied on Skype for everything from casual chats to critical business meetings. With this move, Microsoft is doubling down on Microsoft Teams, their preferred platform for collaboration and communication. This shift is part of a broader effort to streamline their offerings and compete with the growing influence of platforms like Zoom and Google Meet.

Launched in 2003, Skype transformed the way people communicate across distances, offering free voice and video calls that made international connections more accessible. It was a go-to tool for businesses, helping bridge the gap for those working across time zones and borders. In Africa, Skype has been indispensable for many professionals, providing cost-effective ways to connect for everything from day-to-day team meetings to important client calls. However, over time, Skype’s appeal has waned as platforms like Zoom and Meet, which offer more robust features and seamless integration with business tools, gained popularity.

As a matter of fact, the decline of Skype has been long overdue, given the rise of these new tough-skinned competitors. Zoom, after the COVID pandemic, for instance, became an essential tool for team communication and client meetings, with features like breakout rooms and screen sharing that Skype couldn’t match. Google Meet also took a significant chunk of the market with its direct integration with Google’s suite of tools. Microsoft has worked to shift users toward Teams, which not only provides video calls and messaging but also integrates deeply with other Microsoft products, making it a natural fit for business workflows. Skype’s user base, which once numbered in the hundreds of millions, has shrunk dramatically, with just 36 million active users by 2023.

For many professionals in Africa, this transition might mark a significant shift. Skype has been the go-to for virtual meetings and online collaboration, especially for those working in environments with limited access to high-end technology or stable internet, as well as the tech traditionalists. Its simplicity made it an easy platform for businesses to adopt, and its telephony features allowed for inexpensive international calls, which were crucial for keeping teams connected across borders. The phase-out of Skype means Microsoft enthusiastic users will have to quickly adapt to Teams. While Teams and peers offer more advanced features, the change could be challenging for businesses that have relied on Skype for years, especially in regions with less access to fast internet or modern software.

The removal of Skype’s telephony services is particularly impactful for those who rely on the platform for international business calls. For companies and entrepreneurs who have used Skype to maintain cost-effective communication with clients or teams abroad, finding a replacement could be a hassle. The need for alternative solutions to fill the void left by Skype’s removal will force many to reevaluate their communication strategies, whether it’s through upgrading to premium versions of Teams or exploring new providers entirely.

Migrating from Skype to another platform is not without its issues. While it’s possible to transfer contacts and chat history to Microsoft Teams, some data may not be directly transferred, which could create friction for teams that have relied heavily on Skype for project discussions and client records. Teams offer a free version, but for those accustomed to Skype’s paid services, adjusting to the new tools within Teams might come with additional costs, especially for businesses that previously relied on Skype’s premium features.

The shift away from Skype reflects broader trends in the workplace, where specialised platforms for collaboration and communication are becoming the norm. The pandemic accelerated this change, pushing companies and organisations to adapt to virtual meeting culture and embrace platforms that enable real-time collaboration, file sharing, and team management. With Skype out of the picture, the focus has shifted towards platforms like Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet, which are designed not only for communication but also for smooth integration into business workflows.

The transition to more advanced tools presents an opportunity to leverage features that can enhance productivity, improve meeting efficiency, and streamline day-to-day operations. The phase-out highlights the importance of being flexible and staying ahead of the curve in a rapidly changing digital environment. Those who can easily make the shift will be well-positioned to continue thriving in the modern business world, where virtual communication is now a critical part of success.

So, all the facts stated, what’s the difference between the old and the new? When comparing Skype and Teams, you look at security, conditional collaboration tools, integration and reliability, et al.

Security Features: Microsoft Teams offers more advanced security measures, including Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), Conditional Access, and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies, which are not as comprehensive as Skype.

Collaboration Tools: Teams provide a broader range of collaboration features, making it more suitable for business environments. It includes tools like breakout rooms, whiteboard functionality, and real-time co-authoring, which are lacking in Skype.

Integration: Teams seamlessly integrates with Microsoft 365 tools and supports over 2,000 third-party apps, enhancing its utility for organisations, whereas Skype does not support third-party integrations.

Overall, while Skype is better suited for personal use or small teams, Microsoft Teams is superior for business environments due to its robust features and integrations.

In Africa, where businesses, startups as well as development and civil society organisations are growing rapidly, the need for a more reliable communication tool (that can easily be integrated into Agriculture, Mining Energy, Technology, Finance, Manufacturing, Construction, and projection planning) is more pressing than ever. The shift away from Skype offers an opportunity to embrace more powerful, integrated platforms that can support the continent’s growing digital ecosystem. For many, adapting to these tools will be crucial not just for day-to-day operations but for future growth. As digital communication continues to evolve, the next generation of professionals will need to stay agile and tech-savvy to ensure their businesses remain connected, competitive, and ready for whatever comes next.

In a nutshell, Teams has to bring all its innovative wherewithal to beat Zoom and Google Meet.

The world of computers has a lot of brands going on these days, including Dell, Lenovo, HP, those Apple Mac thingies, Toshiba, Acer, and lots of other options. Amongst them, HP and Dell have taken over a great part of the market, which is why I am comparing these brands today. After all, having discussed Windows Vs Linux: which operating System is Right For Your Computer, why not discuss which computer you can run them on?

Now, when choosing a machine, the question shouldn’t exactly be “Which brand is better” but rather “Which brand is better for you.” Your ideal laptop doesn’t exactly work on which company is adding where but rather on how you intend to use it, and how that particular brand fairs in that category.

Brand Overview; Dell & Hp.
Starting with Dell, founded in 1984, has built a solid reputation for producing reliable and customizable laptops. They cater for all use cases, from the high-performance XPS series for professionals, the Dell Latitude series or even the gamers with the Alienware series.

HP (previously Howlett-Packard) on the other hand, was established in 1939, known for its wide range of laptops for multiple use cases as well.

But, how do these brands fair when it comes to individual use cases?

(1). Best For Business & Productivity.
In business and productivity, both brands have released notable pieces on the market.

Dell’s Latitude and XPS business laptops offer high performance with long battery life, good security features and sleek designs. We all like that slim portable design with a great battery. For these, the Dell’s XPS 13 and the Latitude 7420 have been highly recommended by consumer reviews.

HP comes out with the EliteBook and Spectre x360 series for the business class, focusing on security and privacy. For example, the HP EliteBook series comes with various authentication measures like the fingerprint reader and smart card readers, hardware-level protection with the HP Sure Start Gen7 and Intel vPro…not to mention self-healing BIOS, it detects and corrects BIOS corruption.

Verdict:
Dell generally focuses on reliability, productivity and support.
HP offers competitive options but with more focus on security and privacy.

(2). Best for Gamers.
For those of us into gaming, we know how expensive a good gaming laptop costs—and how the overall quality of the machine itself matters for performance.

Dell measures up to these with the Alienware series—high refresh rate displays, NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics and super cooling systems too to keep it all together. Alienware laptops like the m15, R7 or the x17 R2 have been notable choices per consumer reviews.

HP comes up with its OMEN series, offering RTX graphics, Customizable RGB keyboards, and High refresh rates. While the HP OMEN 16 is a decent choice for some gamers, Dell’s Alienware stands out with superior cooling systems and build quality, making it the better option for this use case.

Verdict:
Dell’s Alienware laptops are better suited for hardcore gamers, offering high-performance components and better overall cooling systems.

HP’s OMEN laptops are a fair choice for budget-friendly gaming.

(3). Best for Students.
Dell’s Inspiron series is an affordable and reliable option, making it a popular choice for students. For instance, the Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 laptop offers flexibility with its touchscreen and tablet mode, features that many students highly value.

HP Pavilion series is another budget-friendly option; however, the HP Chromebooks stand out for students seeking a highly portable and budget-friendly device. For those in creative fields, the HP Spectre x360 has proven to be a top-tier premium choice.

Verdict:
HP excels in budget-friendly devices, particularly with its Chromebook options.

Dell offers a well-rounded performance combined with relative affordability.

(4). Best For Creatives & Designers.
Dell offers the XPS 15 and XPS 17 for this category, as they have been favourites amongst many content creators. 4k OLED displays, powerful processors, dedicated GPUs…to put it plainly they provide a great experience for video editing, graphics design and even 3D rendering.

HP offers the ZBook series with workstation-level power. The Spectre x360 15 has been a fantastic alternative for many creatives, offering a 2-in-1 touchscreen with stylus support.

Verdict:
Dell dominates this category with the raw power of the XPS series.
HP counters with creative versatility in the ZBook and Spectre series, appealing to users who prioritise mobility and touchscreen functionality.

(5). Best for Budget Buyers.
Sometimes we have a budget to stick to, but that shouldn’t stop you from owning a computer.

Dell’s Inspiron series, while a little pricier offers better build quality and performance compared to similar HP models. The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 has been a great Enty-level option for many.

HP’s Pavilion and Chromebooks are more affordable making them first choices for users on a strict budget.

Verdict:
HP has more affordable options but sometimes at the compromise of build quality and performance.
Dell offers better build quality and performance in the affordability range, especially if you consider the Inspiron series.

(6). Best for Durability & Longevity.
Dell laptops, particularly the Latitude and XPS series, are built to last, with premium materials, reinforced hinges and better customer support making them a more reliable long-term investment.

HP has made improvements in durability but some budget HP models still don’t last as long as their Dell counterparts. HP’s EliteBook series are built for durability, but at pricier ranges compared to Dell’s options.

Verdict:
Dell takes the win for this one. They are generally known for building durable and reliable laptops with strong support and a focus on long-term use.
HP has improved durability in recent years, but Dell still takes over this category with its XPS and Latitude Laptops.

(7). Operating System Compatibility.
Most people are familiar with the Windows operating system, but there are alternatives like Linux and Chrome OS.

Dell offers a wide range of options, with most models featuring pre-installed Windows, but also select devices running Chrome OS and Linux.

HP provides diverse options as well, with strong Windows support and an expanding selection of Chrome OS and Linux devices.

Verdict:
Tie—both Dell and HP offer flexibility in operating systems.

Final Verdict: Which Brand Should You Choose?

For business & professionals → Dell (XPS, Latitude)

For gaming → Dell Alienware, but HP OMEN for budget-friendly gaming

For students → HP Chromebooks for budget, Dell Inspiron for overall performance

For creatives → Dell XPS for power, HP Spectre x360 for flexibility

For budget buyers → HP wins in affordability, Dell in long-term quality

For durability & support → Dell wins overall

In the end, both brands have excellent laptops and a loyal consumer base that will swear “This is the superior brand,” however, oftentimes, the best brand depends on the individual’s use case and procurement ability.

Let’s address the elephant in the room. Smartphones today are, for the most part, indistinguishable slabs of glass. It’s hard to imagine a time, just a decade or two ago, when mobile phone design was a canvas for creativity and innovation. The 2000s were a golden age for phone design, when manufacturers weren’t afraid to experiment and try something different.

From phones that flipped, twisted and slid to designs that completely rethought what a mobile phone could look and feel like, this was a time when manufacturers took real risks. Here are 10 of the most innovative phone designs of the 2000s that embodied the creativity and ingenuity of an unforgettable era in mobile history.

#10: Nokia N93

Now, let’s look at the design philosophies that defined the leading brands of the 2000s. Nokia championed durability and functionality, with bold and sturdy designs like the N95 and 9300. They embraced experimentation, introducing sliders, flip mechanisms, and unique shapes like the 7280.

In contrast, Motorola focused on sleek minimalism. The RAZR V3 epitomised this approach; thin, stylish, and crafted to make a statement. Their devices blended cutting-edge technology with a premium feel, transforming phones from mere tools into fashionable accessories.

Sony Ericsson carved its niche as a master of multimedia design. Their phones emphasised entertainment, featuring excellent cameras and intuitive navigation. The W series Walkman phones, in particular, prioritised delivering a rich audio experience while maintaining a modern, compact look.

Each brand contributed its flair, spotlighting distinct design elements, whether through functionality, aesthetics, or entertainment. This was truly an era where design was as crucial as the technology embedded within our beloved devices.
