For many, the sad reality of being a YouTube creator is that getting views is only half the battle. First, you must meet YouTube’s monetisation requirements: a certain number of subscribers and watch hours or Shorts views. Then, after setting up AdSense for YouTube and finally earning money from your painfully created content, you still have to wait until your Adsense balance hits $100 before payout.

Most creators wait for over a year for those zero point something to add up to three figures… but that might be changing soon.

In an announcement on 26 October 2026, TeamYouTube revealed that Google is temporarily testing a lower minimum payment threshold of $20, down from the usual $100. The experiment is said to begin with October 2026 payments and applies to a randomly selected group of creators in the United States, India, and Indonesia. Those selected will receive a notification and can track their payment activity in YouTube Studio on mobile.

Does the $20 threshold apply to regular AdSense publishers?

Not according to the announcement. The test specifically concerns AdSense for YouTube, which handles creators’ YouTube earnings. Google has not announced a corresponding reduction in the standard payment threshold for publishers earning through AdSense on websites and blogs.

But is receiving $20 worth it?

A lower threshold sounds good in theory. After all, who would not want to receive their hard-earned money sooner? However, the benefit becomes less obvious when you consider bank charges and other fees that may apply when receiving international payments.

For creators who need the money urgently, a $20 threshold could be welcome news. For those who would rather minimise transaction costs, waiting until their balance reaches $100 might still make more financial sense.
