Hoima Stadium Construction Progress: Update on Uganda’s AFCON 2027 Dream

Hoima Stadium Construction Progress as of 12 January 2025

If you have been following Uganda’s sports infrastructure development, you have probably heard talk about our stadiums—co-hosting AFCON without a standard stadium, the Namboole/Mandela Stadium renovation saga, and whatnot. Well, today, we’re here to talk about Hoima City Stadium, set to host AFCON 2027. With construction about 50% complete, progress seems to be moving faster than anyone expected. Looks like Uganda is serious about hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in style!

From Bare Ground to a Mega Sports Arena in Record Time
Construction began five months ago in August 2024, and the progress is nothing short of impressive. The Turkish firm Summa Construction, known for building the stunning BK Arena in Rwanda, is spearheading the project. And let’s say, these guys don’t waste time!

With over 1,000 workers on site—180 Turkish experts, 140 regional specialists, and nearly 700 local workers—construction is running 24/7. The next big milestone? Roofing, which is set to begin in April 2025. At this pace, the project could be done ahead of the December 31, 2025, deadline…and like any other enthusiast out there, this is great news for Uganda.

Hoima Stadium Construction Current Progress So Far
Foundation and groundwork: Completed within the first two months, ensuring a strong base for the stadium.

Structural framework: 90% of the main stadium’s concrete structure is in place.

Seating areas: Steel reinforcement for the 20,000-seater stadium is 70% complete, and precast concrete seats are being installed.

Drainage and plumbing: Underground piping and drainage systems are in the final stages, ensuring proper water management during games.

Electrical and lighting systems: Installation has started, with modern floodlights and an LED scoreboard planned.

Roofing: Scheduled to begin in April 2025, with pre-fabricated materials already on site.

External facilities: Parking areas and landscaping preparations are ongoing, with road access being improved.

If you are thinking of just another football stadium, think again. Uganda isn’t just building a football pitch; it’s creating a multi-sports complex. To many, this is one of the key advantages of hosting these events. There’s always a need to make something standard, which is how the Hoima City stadium came to be started in the first place. Here’s what to expect:

  • A 20,000-seater main stadium with an athletics track
  • A modern indoor arena for sports like basketball and volleyball
  • A training pitch with an athletics track
  • A semi-Olympic-sized swimming pool (Yes, swimmers, we see you!)
  • Four outdoor courts for basketball, volleyball, netball, and lawn tennis
  • Spacious parking and modern amenities

For years, Uganda’s sports infrastructure has been playing catch-up, but this stadium changes it all.

The Hoima City Stadium is expected to:
Attract international matches and tournaments

Give Uganda Cranes and other national teams a world-class home ground

Inspire young athletes with top-notch facilities

Boost tourism and local businesses in Hoima City

With Uganda co-hosting AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania, the pressure is on to get everything ready in time. But if the current pace is anything to go by, Hoima City Stadium will be more than ready for the big event.

So, sports lovers, this one was for you, stay tuned for more updates as Hoima City Stadium takes shape – Hoima City Stadium Construction on Track to Meet AFCON 2027 Deadline.
