Two months after Meta released WhatsApp for iPad, the company has followed up with the long-awaited Instagram App for Apple’s tablets. Announced on 03 September 2025, the dedicated Instagram App built for iPadOS finally puts an end to years of frustration for users who had to rely on a stretched-out iPhone version, the web browser, or third-party apps like Retro and Padgram to view and interact with Instagram feeds on iPad.
Instagram debuted in October 2010, months after the first iPad was released in April of the same year. Yet, despite launching in the same period, there was never a clear plan to create a dedicated iPad version, unlike Facebook, X (then Twitter), and other social media platforms, which supported the device early on. Simply put, Instagram and iPad co-existed for more than 15 years without ever aligning until now.

The announcement came from Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who confirmed that the app is available worldwide for iPadOS 15.1 and later. Unlike the old workaround, the new app is optimised for larger screens, with a multi-column layout that lets you scroll Reels while reading comments, view DMs and your inbox side by side, and use a sidebar for quick access to Following, DMs, Search, Explore, and Notifications.
This launch ties into Instagram’s bigger focus on video. Over the past year, the platform has added longer Reels, reposting, and fast-forward controls to keep up with TikTok. Now, iPad users finally get a polished and fully native Instagram experience instead of a temporary fix.
