A breakdown of what Record Labels Do

Discover and sign new artists;

As mentioned above, record labels have A&R (Artists and Repertoire) representatives who search for talented artists to sign to their label. They look for artists with unique sounds and personalities who they believe have the potential to be successful and make a profit.

Fund the production and release of music;

Record labels provide a range of services to artists, from recording, mixing, and mastering their music to photo and video shoots, according to the contract signed. They also pay for the marketing and promotion of the music across various media.

Distribute music to stores and streaming services;

Record labels work with distributors and streaming services to get an artist’s music into the hands of listeners and achieve their goals. A process that involves registering songs with the copyright office and enforcing their copyrights against infringement and further disputes over rights.

Promote artists and their music;

Record labels use a variety of promotional tactics, including radio airplay, music videos, and social media campaigns, to polish and amplify artists’ music with the help of hired professionals.

Manage artists’ careers;

Record labels act as a bridge between artists and clients, negotiating endorsement deals, sponsorships, and contracts in addition to booking tours.

In short, record labels are meant to provide artists with guidance and support throughout their careers.

As an upcoming artist who is considering signing with a record label but may not have the firsthand knowledge of what you’re getting into, I hope this article helps you make a better decision.

And oh, before signing a record label contract, do your research, get everything in writing, negotiate the terms, get a lawyer, and make sure you are comfortable with the level of creative control you will have over your music. All the best!
