
Sworn-in Members of Parliament (MPs) in Uganda are scheduled to elect their Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the twelfth Parliament on Monday, 25 May 2026.
The election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker will take place during the first sitting of the 12th Parliament following the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected legislators, which took place from 13 May to 15 May, 2026.
The election will be conducted in accordance with Rule 5 of the Rules of Procedure, which, among other rules (Pages 19 to 23), states:
The election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of Parliament must be presided over by the Chief Justice or a judge designated by the Chief Justice.
Eligibility: The Speaker is elected by Members of Parliament (MPs) from among their own number. However, the Vice President and Ministers are not qualified to be elected as Speaker.
Order of business: When the office is vacant, no other business can be transacted in Parliament until a speaker is elected.
