Elon Musk Calls on Developers to Help Build an Everything App

Elon Musk has put out an open invitation to developers worldwide to help build an “Everything App.” so, if you have ever wanted to work with one of the most ambitious tech visionaries, this might very well be your shot. Besides, unlike traditional hiring processes that emphasise degrees and institutional pedigrees, Musk prioritises raw talent, problem-solving skills and the ability to ship high-quality code…

“We don’t care where you went to school or even whether you went to school or what “big name” company you worked at. Just show us your code.” Elon Musk in a tweet on Jan 15, 2025.

One thing that sets Musk apart in the hiring space is his disregard for formal education as a prerequisite for success. He has repeatedly emphasized that he doesn’t care where (or even if) you went to college—what matters is whether you can do the job. And indeed, many of us have skills we are good at, doesn’t mean we actually attained them at a university.

In his own words: “I don’t care if you even graduated high school.”

How to make contact for this opportunity?
Musk is known for his hands-on approach to hiring. Developers interested in contributing to X’s expansion should actively engage with the platform itself. He frequently responds to users who showcase innovative ideas, and the company has been known to recruit talent directly through X.

“If you’re a hardcore software engineer and want to build the everything app, please join us by sending your best work to code@x.com…” Musk.

That said, what exactly is in an Everything App?

An everything app, or rather a “super app” is a single platform that integrates multiple services—social media, messaging, payments, e-commerce, ride-hailing services and more. The idea is to make a one-stop shop for anything you can do online, one app with all these other services.

This has been particularly achieved in China, where WeChat serves as the gold standard. one app that allows you to chat, order food, book a ride, pay bills, and even access entertainment—all without switching between different applications. That’s what Elon Musk is envisioning.

While this concept of a super app is relatively new in many regions, it has been successfully implemented in Asia. China’s WeChat for example, started as a simple messaging platform that later expanded to include other services to its users. Users in China can make mobile payments, shop and e-commerce, social network, book taxis and even flights, they can even access government services in the app. This alone shows that there actually is potential in an everything app.

On that note, WeChat’s success in China was greatly due to the fact that China is a closed ecosystem. Western markets on the other hand have specialized apps for all these services which would be a strong factor. Apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, PayPal, Uber, etc. all with an already established market base. Not to mention regulatory and privacy concerns the West is so fond of.

At the same time, however, Elon Musk has a track record of defying odds and making the unexpected, I mean, when Tesla came out, no one expected it to take over the Electric vehicle market, or even Space X’s advancements in space tech. So, who knows, another marvel might be on its way.

If you are a developer with the skills to contribute to this project, Elon Musk said it all already.
