The toughest part of a job interview is often the questions you’re asked. Keep in mind that most employers and hiring teams already have an idea about you, either through background research, social media, or past employers, long before you walk into their office or join that Zoom call. Sure, some questions seem “dumb” or unnecessary, but that is because they are not really checking facts; they’re assessing you.

Most of the time, questions asked during a job interview are meant to reveal the kind of employee you are and, more importantly, how you answer them, which can say a lot about you.

And yes, these questions can make or break your chances of getting the job, which is why it’s better you answer them clearly and confidently, not just correctly. Here’s a little something on how to naturally answer commonly asked questions in a job interview, without sounding like you memorised them off LinkedIn, even if that’s where you found the job listing.

#1. How to answer Why Are You Leaving Your Current Job in an Interview?
I value what I’ve gained from my current job, and I feel ready for a new environment where I can contribute more and keep improving.

#2. How To Answer Why Are You Interested in This Job?
I’m interested in this role because it offers me an opportunity to contribute to the team while also continuing to learn and grow.

#3. How To Answer How Much Is Your Expected Salary
It’s too early for me to give a specific number since I’m still learning more about the role. Could you share the budget range, or can we revisit the salary later in the process?
You want to avoid giving a salary figure too early, but if you must, use a figure that’s about 20% higher than your current or expected starting salary.

#4. How To Answer Why Should We Hire You
I have all the skill set and expertise mentioned in the job description, and I’m ready to apply them effectively in this role.

#5. How To Answer Where Do You See Yourself In 5 Years in an Interview
In five years, I see myself having gained good experience in this role and contributing at a higher level while continuing to learn and improve. (This answer works even if you don’t plan to stay for long.)

This question is actually quite vague. You can look at it in two ways: either the interviewer is gauging your ambition and thoughtfulness, or it’s just a standard question you need to answer so it aligns with what they expect. Go with the flow!

What about if the company asks you a question like “if u are offered a better paying job once we have offered you this one, would you consider leaving us for it or u would be loyal and stay with us”
    What could be your response

    1. That’s a rarely asked question; however, if you’re asked, tell them what they want to hear. And if asked why, tell them their vision aligns with yours. But keep in mind that when you get a better offer, consider choosing it.
