During the recent internet shutdown, Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports, through legacy media, officially postponed the reopening of all schools and educational institutions to Tuesday, 10 February 2026. This reschedules the start of the first term from the previously announced date of 2 February 2026.
The government explained that the change is necessary due to the ongoing 2026 General Elections, aiming to ensure the safety of learners and prevent disruptions to academic activities. The adjustment applies to government and private schools, international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities in Uganda.
According to the latest circular signed on 16 January by Permanent Secretary Dr Kedrace R. Turyagyenda, Term One of the 2026 academic year will now run from 10 February to 1 May 2026. School leaders, parents, guardians, and students are advised to take note and prepare for the revised schedule.
