WhatsApp Music Status Feature: Latest Update and How To Use It

For influencers, digital marketers, and casual users alike, WhatsApp is an all-in-one app—from messaging, video calls to voice calls, it basically does it all. And that’s not to mention how affordable it is—just 100MB of data can keep you texting all day.

Of course, if you’ve been using WhatsApp for a while, you’ve probably noticed its many changes over the years. From the battle against GB WhatsApp users to new privacy options, WhatsApp keeps evolving, and now, the latest addition? You can add music to your status updates! Yep, just like on Instagram and Snapchat.

The New WhatsApp Music Status Feature?
WhatsApp’s new feature lets users add music to their status updates. No more awkwardly playing music in the background while recording a video just to set the mood (I have done this before, not very chic trust me). Now, you can directly select a song from WhatsApp’s music library and attach it to your status, making your updates more engaging and expressive.

The feature works similarly to Instagram Stories’ music option, where you can pick a music track, select the exact portion you want, and post it with your image or video.

When Was This Feature Released?
The WhatsApp music status feature started rolling out in early 2025, first to beta users on Android before expanding to all users on both Android and iOS. If you don’t see the feature yet or can’t find a specific artist’s music, don’t worry—it may still be rolling out in your region.

How to Add Music to Your WhatsApp Status
Update WhatsApp: Ensure you have the latest version of WhatsApp from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Open WhatsApp and Go to Status: Tap on the ‘Status’ or ‘Updates’ tab as you would when creating a normal status update.

Create a New Status: Tap the camera icon to take a new photo/video or select an existing one from your gallery.

Add Music: Look for the ‘Music’ icon (a small musical note) at the top of your screen, where the other status editing tools are, and tap on it.

Select a Song: Browse through the available music library or search for a specific song.

Choose the Clip: Adjust the start and end points to select the best part of the song (usually a 15-second snippet).

Customize Your Status: Add stickers, text, or doodles if you want to make it even more fun.

Post It: Once satisfied, hit ‘Send’ and share your new and improved musical status!

Why Is This Feature a Big Deal?
For one, it makes WhatsApp Status updates way more engaging, whether you’re posting a birthday shoutout, a motivational quote, or just flexing a vibe, music adds an emotional touch. Imagine posting a pic of the birthday friend with a birthday song playing together with the picture… Plus, it saves you from having to record music separately or use third-party apps to create a background tune.

Can Everyone Use This Feature?
Not just yet! The WhatsApp music status feature is being gradually released in phases, as it’s common with such application feature updates, so some users might not have it immediately. If you don’t see the music option in your Status editor, ensure your app is updated. If it’s still not there, you might need to wait a little longer. That said, some of the devices in Uganda are already having and using the feature, on both the WhatsApp Messenger and WhatsApp Business applications.

So, whether it’s a sentimental track to a throwback picture or a hype song to match your weekend mood, my opinion on the feature is positive, and can’t wait for it to be more widely used.
